It May Be the Only Gift They Receive This Holiday

Jane and Jubilee McLean have been sewing for several years, often giving their creations to others who might need a warm shawl or a new pillowcase. This year is no exception as they cart a large container full of both in the senior dining room at Flathead County's South Building, home of our Agency on Aging. "We wanted to make sure the seniors in our remote areas, and ones who can't get out, receive a gift," says Mom. These 4H girls worked more than 40 hours to create piles of heartfelt treasures for our county's most vulnerable group.

Dawn and Darell, who head up the local Warm Up America group here in Kalispell, have also been busy knitting lap blankets, scarves, and caps for gift bags that Meals on Wheels drivers will deliver to seniors along with a warm meal. "For some, this will be the only gift they receive this holiday season," said MOW driver Marcus. "This is the best job! We look forward to seeing our seniors. We bring them a hot meal, check on them, ask them how they feel, or listen to a story. I've been doing this for years and I've met some real characters!"

Agency on Aging volunteer drivers deliver roughly 400 meals Monday through Friday across Flathead County. The recipients are often unable to drive, cannot use public transportation, or cannot prepare their meals anymore, and the MOW driver may be the only person they see daily. We are still in need of volunteers to ensure our program can continue to serve these vulnerable citizens. Drivers do deliver in the rain, snow, or shine, so a dependable car and updated license is required. If you are interested in delivering even just one day a week or being a backup driver, please call 406-758-5711.

There's someone out there just waiting for a meal and a smile.
