Steve Shaver Makes National Congressional Record

Earlier this year Steve Shaver was working for the Flathead County Road and Bridge Department to remove snow along his Hungry Horse route, when a woman emerged frantically from her home. Her husband had stopped breathing and she was desperate for help. Shaver jumped from his snow truck, braved the woman’s two barking pit bulls, and found her husband unconscious inside the home.

He immediately started lifesaving chest compressions and worked in tandem with the woman as she breathed into her husband’s lungs. They continued until eventually he regained consciousness, more regular breathing returned, and emergency medical assistance arrived. On a frigid Montana winter day, Steve Shaver put his own safety aside to help a stranger in dire need.

Recognizing this extraordinary act, Shaver’s coworkers nominated him for being “caught in the act” of going beyond normal work duties to prevent an injury or accident, and his coworkers weren’t the only ones who took notice. Senator Steve Daines was so impressed by the heroics he recognized Shaver as Montanan of the Month for April 2024 and was inducted to the National Congressional Record on April 8.

Daines stated in the record, “It is my distinct honor to recognize Steve Shaver for his heroic act of selfless service that saved a fellow Montanan’s life. May his bravery and compassion serve as inspiration to each of us to stand by our neighbors in times of trouble. You make Montana proud!”

On May 23, a leather-bound printed copy of the recognition was presented to Shaver in the Commissioner’s Chambers. Kevin French, a representative for Senator Steve Daines, bestowed him with the honor while Shaver’s wife, brother, and coworkers congratulated him, along with all three Flathead County Commissioners.

Steve Shaver's bravery and quick action serve as an extraordinary example of the Montana spirit. His selflessness and dedication remind us of the strength and compassion found within our community.
