WHAT IS REDISTRICTING?

Redistricting is the act of drawing new political boundaries. In Montana, a five-member Districting and Apportionment Commission has authority under the Montana Constitution to draw the boundaries of congressional and legislative districts every 10 years. Using population data from the most recent U.S. Census, the commission must draw districts with approximately the same number of people in them. Montana has used a commission to draw congressional and state legislative districts since 1973.
 
The Montana Districting and Apportionment Commission adopted the final Legislative Districting Plan and Filed the plan with the Montana Secretary of State on February 22, 2023.

WHAT CHANGES WERE MADE?

Senate Bill 86 passed the legislature in early 2023 and limits the number of registered voters in each precinct to 2,500 or fewer. With this change, Flathead County gained 14 additional precincts, increasing our total current precincts from 42 to 56. 
 
  • New precinct boundary lines were drawn in accordance with the Montana Districting and Apportionment Commission.
  • There were changes to every voter's precinct assignment.
  • There were changes to all house and senate districts.
  • There were changes made to city boundary lines.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR VOTING IN FLATHEAD COUNTY?

Voting in Montana is determined based on a residential address of a voter. Since legislative district boundaries were changed as a result of the redistricting process, a voter’s residential address may now be located in a different House and/or Senate District, and, therefore, a voter’s precinct assignment may also change. If a voter’s House and Senate District changes, this affects who their legislative representatives are and what district position/candidates they will vote on.

To make any changes to your voter information, complete this form and send it to the Flathead County election office by email, mail, or drop it off in person! Please review late registration dates available on the Upcoming Election Page as this may effect how you receive a ballot.
