Landfill Fee Increase

Flathead County Solid Waste District has not raised fees since 2007, but due to the rapid growth of Flathead County and to better serve our community, a fee increase is now necessary. After a thorough study by MSW Consultants, a fee adjustment is recommended to take effect on November 1, 2024. The annual assessment fee for residential units will increase from $80.73 to $92.84, with a 3% annual rise over the next four years. Service charges and green waste fees will also be adjusted.

The Landfill serves county residents, businesses, commercial haulers, and the cities of Columbia Falls, Kalispell, and Whitefish. Additionally, the District maintains Green Box sites for free disposal of bagged waste and recyclables and offers monthly hazardous waste collection and junk vehicle removal at no charge. These essential services require significant funding to maintain and operate efficiently.

The fee adjustment aims to address increased operational costs due to inflation, the need for additional staff, landfill expansion capital costs and the growth in waste volume and parcel units. These changes are crucial to ensuring the continued quality and availability of waste management services in Flathead County.

A public meeting for comments and protests on the fee increase will be held on June 25, 2024, at 3:00 PM at the Flathead County Solid Waste District office, 4098 Highway 93 North in Kalispell.
