AOA Volunteer Finds and Helps Fallen Client

In a display of community support, a volunteer from AOA’s Meals on Wheels recently played a pivotal role in potentially saving the life of an elderly client. On April 23, this volunteer discovered the client in their home, having fallen the day before and unable to call for help. For a staggering 24 hours, the client lay immobilized until the volunteer arrived with their meal delivery.

Responding to the calls of distress from inside, the volunteer sprang into action. Upon finding the front door locked, she made her way to the back entrance. Inside, she discovered the client, suffering from an injured hip and unable to move. With no Life Alert device, the client's sole lifeline was the consistent presence of the Meals on Wheels volunteers.

The volunteer swiftly contacted both the client's son and emergency services, ensuring prompt medical attention at Logan Health. This incident emphasizes the critical role that volunteers play in our communities, especially for those who may lack traditional support networks.

AOA volunteers undergo comprehensive training to handle situations like these effectively. Through orientation sessions and ride-alongs with experienced drivers, they familiarize themselves with protocols and emergency procedures.  AOA maintains thorough records of clients' emergency contacts during intake and serves as a vital link for those whose families reside out-of-state. Daily check-ins conducted by volunteers from Monday through Friday provide invaluable peace of mind to many of these families. These consistent interactions foster meaningful relationships between volunteers and clients.

Beyond delivering meals, volunteers serve as lifelines, guardians of well-being, and beacons of hope for those in need. Their dedication and compassion exemplify the true spirit of community, illuminating the profound significance of their role in safeguarding the welfare of our most vulnerable members.
