Explore Law Enforcement Opportunities at a Young Age

As we think about the actions on 9/11/2001, we have to plan for the next generation to keep our country, states, and cities safe. We are proud to say Flathead County has an active Explorers program, prepping youth to be the next generation of potential law enforcement. We are also the ONLY county in Montana to offer this program.

An Explorer is a program for 14 – to 20-year-old youth to work with and learn about law enforcement. The national organization started as part of the Boy Scout program and has been extended to include girls. It provides a peak into a potential career in criminal justice or public safety.

This is a year-round program working with the Sheriff's Office and Posse. They learn about patrol techniques, crime scenes, detention, crash investigations, traffic laws, and criminal law. Explorers are issued uniforms and work under the supervision of Certified Officers at special events ranging from the #nwmt Fair, concerts, school sporting events, and more.

To be an Explorer for Flathead County, you must:

- Be between the ages of 14-20

- Must live in Flathead County or attend a High School in Flathead County.

- Maintain a minimum of a C average in school

- Pass a background check

- Be able to attend meetings and training about three times a month on Tuesdays/Thursday evenings.

If you are interested in the local program, email Michael Hingiss, 7-138 Reserve Deputy, Explorer Post #2907 Advisor: mhingiss(at)flathead.mt.gov.
