Jay Sorenson: 25 Years at Flathead County

In a world where change is constant, there is something profoundly inspiring about dedication and longevity. Jay Sorenson, a supervisor with the Flathead County Road Department, recently celebrated an extraordinary milestone: 25 years of service to our community.

Jay and his wife have called Flathead County home for 35 years. The Sorensons planted deep roots here, raising a family and becoming integral parts of our community. “I love the mountains and really everything about the Flathead,” Jay shares. “The options for things to do outside are never-ending.” This appreciation for the outdoors is mirrored in his work, where he has spent decades ensuring our roads are safe and accessible for all.

Jay’s journey with Flathead County began 25 years ago as a truck driver. For 18 years, he worked in the Canyon area, mastering the art of road grading. “I liked running the road grader because it was a challenge,” he explains. Over time, his skill and dedication earned him a promotion to supervisor, a role he’s held for the last 7 years.

For Jay, the challenges of the job have always been part of the reward. “We’re out there trying to improve the community with every project we do,” he says. “There is satisfaction in overcoming the daily challenges. It’s a fun job, and I get to be with the guys on the crew every day—they’re great guys.”

The Flathead County Road Department team is a close-knit group of around 30 workers. Jay’s respect for his colleagues is evident as he describes the team’s culture. “I don’t have to micromanage these men. They’re incredible workers who take their work seriously and get a lot done,” he says. In winter, tasks tend to be more independent, but summer demands tighter teamwork. “Everyone comes together and pulls their weight. We have so many different people who know their positions incredibly well and execute them professionally.”

Looking to the future, Jay plans to work for at least three more years, though he’s not ruling out staying longer. When the time comes to retire, he and his wife plan to remain in the valley, enjoying a mix of relaxation and travel. Their strong family ties—a daughter and two sons who live locally and own their own businesses—will keep them firmly rooted in the place they love.

Jay Sorenson’s 25 years of service are a remarkable achievement. As we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate the values of hard work, commitment, and community that he embodies so well. Congratulations, Jay, and thank you for your unwavering service to Flathead County.
