February is Sexual Health Awareness Month.
Sexual Health Awareness Month aims to increase awareness of sexual health issues and encourage Montana communities to start talking openly about relationships and sexuality.
February is traditionally known as the month of love and romance. However, along with roses and chocolate comes the need to make well-informed choices about intimate relationships and sexuality. That is why February has been deemed Sexual Health Awareness Month. Sexual Health Awareness Month aims to broaden people’s understanding of sexual health and encourage positive intimate relationships.
The need for more information and better decision-making in sexual relationships is apparent in Montana’s young adults. In 2007, 75% of all reported Chlamydia cases and 66% of all Gonorrhea cases occurred in those between the ages of 15-24. Almost half (44%) of all pregnancies in Montana are unplanned. In conjunction with National Condom Week (February 14-201, 2010) and Sexual Health Awareness Month, the campaign, “It Just Makes Sense!” is reaching out to Montanans between the ages of 18-30, in an effort to increase awareness and understanding of the social, cultural, environmental and behavioral factors that can influence their sexual health.
“It Just Makes Sense!” provides young adults with access to accurate information regarding sexuality. By equipping people with this information, they can make well-informed decisions and safer choices when engaging in sexual activity. Encouraging young adults, peer groups and communities to start talking more honestly and openly about sexuality will result in healthier relationships and increased wellbeing.
Sexual health is defined as a state of physical, emotional, mental and societal wellbeing related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. Sexual health is also about open communication, acceptance of individual differences and having realistic expectations and an understanding of sexuality. It’s about life, love, relationships and the freedom of expression. It’s about what’s going on in your head, what you think and feel, and how you relate this to others. It’s about safety, confidence and respect.
You can participate in Sexual Health Awareness Month by talking with the young adults in your life and ensure that they are well-equipped with the knowledge to make positive choices when it comes to their sexual health. Flathead Family Planning is encouraging honest and open communication regarding sexuality. Flathead Family Planning offers a variety of educational materials, resources, and learning opportunities to discuss healthy sexuality.
